The History of the Chair

For thousands of years, the chair has been used as a sign of reputation and status, rather than a utility item. Even today, having a chair is a symbol of authority. Such that "chairman" also means like president. All committees, board of management and academic departments are managed by persons holding the title of chairman.

The chair was not widely used anywhere until the 16th century. The number of chairs that have survived from ancient times to the present is also very small. Our information about the chairs in ancient times is completely obtained from monuments, sculptures and paintings. A small number of examples are also in the British Museum in England and in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

The chair, which is a symbol of magnificence, was made of ebony, ivory or gilt and wood carving style in ancient times, covered with expensive materials and beautiful patterns, has been supported by legs with animal figures. In China, it spread to all levels of society after being seen as a high seat among the Chinese elites during the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD). Although it was common in other Asian countries in the 12th century, in China, on the ground has not been sat, stools have been used in most of the houses.

With the change that came with the Renaissance in Europe, the chair has ceased to be a privilege and has become an item that anyone can buy and use at home.
